My Approach
“How does therapy, with you, work and how are you different from the others?”
How I work
In the Beginning
People usually arrive with a mixture of distress, confusion, and often a long history of trying to understand what is “wrong” with them.
The first phase of our work is not treatment but understanding. We slow things down and build a clear, compassionate picture of your difficulties in the context of your life, relationships, and nervous system.
Much of the early work involves identifying recurring automatic thoughts, images, emotions and their patterns. Together, we explore your pain and what your symptoms might point to. This often includes working with long-standing beliefs about yourself and others.
Many clients find this helpful because the focus shifts from “what is wrong with me?” to “how and why did this pattern develop and what keeps it going?”
The Structure
Once we have a shared understanding, therapy becomes more active and change-focused.
My approach is unique in its use of mental and physical exercises to help you regulate emotion and behaviour in everyday life and at the same time we work to help you make peace with your past. Sessions are collaborative, reflective, and practical; the aim is to allow insight to make changes that you can feel outside the therapy room.
Some clients also bring questions about meaning, identity, or spirituality, especially when life events challenge their sense of direction or purpose. When this is relevant, we can include these themes in a grounded and psychologically informed way, connecting them to your emotional life and relationships rather than treating them as separate issues.
What therapy with me is like
Sessions are conversational and collaborative. We move between understanding, emotional processing, and practical change. Clients often describe therapy as a place where difficult experiences are taken seriously, patterns become clearer, and new ways of responding gradually feel possible.
My goal is to empower you to create lasting long-term change at the neurological level. This kind of change takes a lot of patience and commitment. How much support and guidance you need from me will largely depend on you. Once therapy is established, clients often only need to see me once a month and then quickly become independent.
Change between sessions
Therapy is most effective when the work continues in everyday life. Alongside our conversations, I offer practical exercises that help you apply what we discuss to real situations. These may include mindfulness, brief meditation practices, and skills for managing intense emotions and relationships. They are always tailored to the person and introduced gradually so they feel achievable rather than overwhelming.
The aim is not to give homework in a school-like sense, but to help you develop tools you can use independently. Many clients begin to notice shifts relatively early because they are practising new ways of responding during the week, not just talking about them in sessions. My role is to guide, support, and refine these practices with you; lasting change comes from what you are able to carry into your daily life.
The Next Step
If what you have read feels relevant to your experience, the next step is to arrange an initial consultation. This first meeting is a chance to discuss what brings you to therapy, ask questions, and see whether working together feels like the right fit. You are not committing to ongoing therapy by making contact.
You can book a session using the button below or to simply ask a question first.
